We depart from Quito heading south, to the heart of the “Avenue of the Volcanoes”. Around midday, we arrive at Cotopaxi National Park, located 60 km from the city, and dominated by the mighty Cotopaxi Volcano, one of Ecuador’s most spectacular landmarks. Offering a view of its perfect snow cone (depending on weather conditions), Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in the world. Endemic flora and fauna include the beautiful fiery-orange Chuquiragua (Ecuador’s national flower), wild horses, native White-tailed Deer, llamas, and the only mountain-dwelling gull in the world. Limpiopungo Lake, located near Mount Rumiñahui (at 4757 masl), provides an accessible experience to the high-Andean ‘paramo’, where visitors can hike, watch birds and breath in the crystalline, revitalizing mountain air.

We will enjoy lunch at a colonial mountain hacienda.

We return to Quito in the afternoon.
