Cuenca is strategically located near important ecosystems with great bird diversity:

 

EL CAJAS NATIONAL PARK (35 Km) hosts some 150 upper Andean species; the most notable is the Violet-throated Metal tail, an endemic hummingbird of this protected area. Other birds of interest are the Carunculated Caracara, Tawny Antpitta, Stout-billed Cinclodes the Ecuadorian Hill star, and the “King of the Andes”; the majestic Andean Condor.
